"You know I'm surprised she's aloud to stay in town."
"I'm just ashamed to share a color with her."
This was daily life. Constant taunts and insults about my mixed-berry heritage. My father, Ivan White, was a teal berry who married my mother, Lilac White, a purple berry. Cross-color relationships were strictly prohibited in Appleloosa Pie, a small country town where everyone knew everyone. Honey Bea, a yellow berry, and her two lackeys, Sylvia Ocean and Holly Pea, were the worst. They made sure they were always waiting when I got out of work.
"Why not go join your parents Amethyst?" Honey crowed, making a slitting gesture at her throat. I said nothing, trying not to show that her comment hurt.
My parents had died a month after my eighteenth birthday in a car accident. The police called it an accident but I knew it wasn't. I missed them a lot, they were the only ones who really cared about me.
Tired of their incessant taunts I made a run for my house. My flats slapping the pavement quietly, I arrived at my small teal house. I threw the door open and slipped inside, sliding down the wall to catch my breath.
I leaned my head against the window, running a hand through my hair. I always let them get to me, I'd never been strong about asserting my self-confidence, like I had any. Once I had calmed down I pulled myself off the floor and walked into the ever familiar family room.
Averting my eyes from an old picture of my parents I turned to face the TV.
A montage of pictures showing my father and I through my childhood warmed my heart. I missed my dad most, he always understood me despite living a completely different life when he was my age.
Just thinking about him brought a small smile to my face. My life as a child had ended.
My life as a young woman had just begun.
Poor thing. :( I hate prejudice people. Those mean berry girls need a smack down. I think she's cute. I think her hair color goes nice with the skin tone. Sad that her parents died in a car crash, even though it sounds like they may have been murdered due to there illegal romance. Great start!
ReplyDeleteThey do indeed need a smack down. I had a fun time making her, finding the right mix of colors. Thanks for reading though!
DeleteAww, Amethyst. She's so beautiful. =) Hehe, she may be "illegal" in her town, but I think she's way prettier than those mean girls who make fun of her. Hehe.
ReplyDeleteGood to know someone thinks so ^u^
